If you want privacy, you are almost certainly choosing between vinyl and wood. Both will screen a back yard at six feet. What separates them is what happens in years three, ten and twenty — and in Tidewater, that gap is wider than it would be inland.
Up-front cost favors wood
Pressure-treated pine is the least expensive privacy fence we install, typically running well under what an equivalent vinyl run costs. Western red cedar sits in the middle, closer to vinyl than to pine.
If the budget is fixed and the fence has to go up now, pine is a legitimate choice. Just go in with clear expectations about what it will need from you.
Lifetime cost favors vinyl, decisively
A pine privacy fence in Hampton Roads needs cleaning and re-sealing roughly every two to three years. Skip that and you will see graying within a year, cupped and split boards within three, and rot at the ground line well before the fence should be finished.
Vinyl needs a hose. That is the entire maintenance program. Over a twenty-year horizon, the labor and material you would have spent maintaining wood typically exceeds the price difference at installation.
Salt air changes the math further
Coastal humidity plus salt accelerates every failure mode wood has. Moisture drives into end grain, fasteners corrode and bleed rust streaks down boards, and the constant wet-dry cycling works joints loose.
Vinyl is chemically indifferent to all of it. If your property takes salt spray, vinyl's advantage is not marginal — it is the difference between a fence that ages and one that degrades.
Appearance is where wood earns its keep
Modern vinyl has improved enormously, and woodgrain-textured panels in tan and khaki look genuinely good. But cedar has a depth and warmth that a molded panel does not replicate, and for some homeowners that is the whole point.
Wood is also far more flexible in design. Board-on-board, shadowbox, scalloped tops, lattice caps, custom heights and mixed profiles are all straightforward when we are cutting on site. Vinyl comes in the styles the manufacturer makes.
How we usually advise
Within about three miles of open salt water, we lead with vinyl unless the homeowner specifically wants the look of wood and accepts the upkeep. Further inland, cedar becomes a genuinely competitive choice, especially where the design calls for something custom.
Pressure-treated pine we recommend when budget is the binding constraint and the homeowner is realistic about sealing it on schedule.
